Parity indices, (female/male) primary OOS

Definition:

  • Parity indices are indicators used to measure equality in enrollment rates between females and males in a specific level of education. In this context, it refers to the parity indices specifically looking at female vs male enrollment in primary school.
  • Primary school is the first stage of formal education, typically designed for children between the ages of 6 and 11.
  • Out-of-school (OOS) rates refer to the percentage of children within the official age range for a specific level of education who are not enrolled in school.
  • Therefore, parity indices for female/male primary OOS specifically measures how equal the out-of-school rates are between girls and boys in primary education. A parity index of 1 indicates that the OOS rates are the same for both genders. A parity index greater than 100 indicates that there are more boys out of school compared to girls, and vice versa for a parity index less than 100.
